Could not connect to update server

When I try to update I get an error message
Could not connect to update server. Check proxy settings.
I don't think I need to run a proxy.
I am running a laptop at home using wireless connection.
Emsisoft is included as exception on firewall.
Turning firewall off makes no difference.
I am having the same problem with other malware detection programs since being infected by a trojan. Since infection additional windows open when I use internet. Not detected today by Emsisoft.
Any ideas how to resolve update issue?

1) the message "Could not connect to update server. Check..." sometimes can be seen when the server has temporary problems / overloaded / etc.
So basically you will get an update trying later.
2) ... but since the situation is not fixed for you by doing that;
you saing that Firewall rules were not changed;
in addition you have issues with other security being unable to update;
plus you have a suspicion about an infection:
