Remove Baidu adware

My PC (running on Windows XP) is infected with Baidu Adware. I ran a full scan with the Anti-Malware software to remove it, only to find that the problem still persisted. I then sought help from Emsisoft & communicated with one of their staff (Christian Peters). Following his instruction, I downloaded & ran the following programs from their site:
- Emsisoft Emergency Kit
- CCleaner Portable
- OTL by OldTimer

Attached are the output files. I don't know how to read them and would appreciate any guidance from specialists.

Posted Image Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. NOT supported for use in 9x or ME

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 25 .
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform, Register and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the download link for your system and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager:
    Windows x86 Offline (jre-6u25-windows-i586.exe)
    Windows Intel Itanium (jre-6u25-windows-ia64.exe)
    Windows x64 (jre-6u25-windows-x64.exe)
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista/7 users, right click on the JRE download and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Thanks again for your help.

I followed through the instructions (removed all existing Java stuff & installed the JRE software - windows x88 offline, which was suggested by Lynx of Emsisoft) & ran OTL.exe with the codes you provided. Attached is the log file.

After the reboot, the Baidu bar is till on the IE. I went to Tools (internet options -> programs-> manage addons) to remove it as a search provider. But it comes back after I restart IT (version 8). What a vicious virus!

Any further steps I can take to terminate it?

Download Dr.Web CureIt!

Run the utility and press the "Start" button in the opened window. Confirm the launch by pressing the "OK" button and wait for the scanning results of the main memory and startup files. Select the Complete scan and press the "Start scanning" button on the scanner right.

When being scanned, infected files are cured, incurable files are moved to the quarantine directory.

I downloaded the program and ran it on my PC. Yet the process seemed to be interrupted, as I cannot get to the point of selecting complete scan. Attached is the message that popped up, plus the log file. What can I do?

Click here to download HJTInstall.exe
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Come back here to this thread and attach the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

The reason we are having such a hard time removing this, is that it is not where I would expect to find Baidu Search. Things like this are why one should avoid installing just about everything coming out of China. A very large percentage of applications coming out of China include spyware, and unwanted programs.

Attached is the log file. The problem, however, does not go away. Baidu still shows up on my tool bar despite repeated effort to delete it from ad-on management under Tools.

After running scan in HiJackThis, the following item remains unremoved. Should I proceed to run OTL.exe?

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Save as Combo-Fix.exe during the download. ComboFix must be renamed before you download to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT !!! Save Combo-Fix to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
    See HERE for help
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

When finished, ComboFix will produce a log.

Note:
1. Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall!
2. Remember to re-enable your anti-virus and anti-spyware before reconnecting to the Internet.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove some stuff.
  • Make sure that the copy of combofix.exe that you downloaded earlier is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
  • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
  • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it

Note: DO NOT mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

The ComboFix folder should not be renamed since ComboFix and even we would have suspicions about it. Also when you uninstall CF, the folder would not be removed since it does not look for that folder name.

Your logs look fine.

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
Delete the following from your Desktop (If they exist)
CFscript.txt
FixMe.reg
FixReg.reg
Anything else I had you use

Delete the following files: (If they exist)
C:\ComboFix.txt

Delete the following folders: (If they exist)
C:\ComboFix
C:\Qoobox

Empty the Recycle Bin

Run CCleaner

You can delete and uninstall any programs I had you download, that you do not wish to keep on the system.

Run Windows Update and update your Windows Operating System.

Run the Secunia Online Software Inspector, this will inspect your system for software that is out-of-date and in need of updating. Update anything program/application detected as being out-dated.

To take ownership of a file or a folder

How to take ownership of a file
You must have ownership of a protected file in order to access it. If another user has restricted access and you are the computer administrator, you can access the file by taking ownership.

To take ownership of a file, follow these steps:
  • Right-click the file that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
  • Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
  • Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
  • In the Name list, click Administrator, or click the Administrators group, and then click OK.

    The administrator or the administrators group now owns the file.
To change the permissions on the file that you now own, follow these steps:
  • Click Add.
  • In the Enter the object names to select (examples) list, type the user or group account that you want to have access to the file. For example, type Administrator.
  • Click OK.
  • In the Group or user names list, click the account that you want, and then select the check boxes of the permissions that you want to assign that user.
  • When you are finished assigning permissions, click OK.
  • You can now access the file.
How to take ownership of a folder
You must have ownership of a protected folder in order to access it. If another user has restricted access and you are the computer administrator, you can access the folder by taking ownership.

To take ownership of a folder, follow these steps:
  • Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
  • Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).

  • In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of the folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
  • Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message:

    You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?

    All permissions will be replaced if you click Yes.

    Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.
  • Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.
You should now be able to delete the Qoobox folder.
