on the occasions when I am having issues, and reading the thread that tells me to download/run eek, I was wondering how (or if) it is different from the emsi program I already have installed and (hopefully) already updated?

Emsisoft Anti-malware (both the free and the pro version) and the Emsisoft Emergency Kit all use identical detection signatures. So if your installed Anti-malware application is working correctly there is no need to use the EEK alongside it.

The EEK is very handy when a computer is already infected. It does not require any installation, which is an advantage, because malware might block installation of security software.
