Windows Expert Console Rogue Removal Instructions

The Emsisoft malware research team has discovered a new outbreak of the Windows Expert Console Rogue.Emsisoft Anti-Malware detects this malware as Rogue.Win32.ExpertConsole.

Windows Expert Console is a rogue scanner application. A rogue application tries to trick you by displaying false-positive or misleading scan results, which claim your computer has a problem, or is infected with viruses or trojans, but you will not be able to fix this unless you purchase the (fake) program.


Created files and folders:

Note, %appdata% refers to the current users Application Data folder. By default, this is C:\Documents and Settings\<Current User>\Application Data for Windows XP. For Windows Vista, 7 and 8 it is C:\Users\<Current User>\AppData\Roaming.


Created registry entries:

"GuardSoftware" = "%AppData%\guard-<random>.exe"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
"Shell" = "C:\\Users\\User\\AppData\\Roaming\\guard-<random>.exe"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\msseces.exe 
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\msmpeng.exe 



To remove this malware infection, please download and install Emsisoft Anti-Malware. Run a full scan on all drives and move all detected items to quarantine.
