Can not install Free 4.5 [Resolved]

Recommended Posts

Hi Team

I've been using this on my desktops for years and I want to install it on my laptop now but

I can't get it to install.

I have

Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)

McAfee VirusScan Version 99.9.99 Realtime File Scanning On

All required security hotfixes (using the 02/09/2010 Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary) have been installed.

I'm using a-squared FREE 4.5 exe.

I keep getting An Error has occurred while trying to replace existing file:

DeleteFile failed; code 5

Access denied

It doesn't matter if I check or uncheck Install scan via context menu

Thanks for any help

Hi HDRider, welcome to the forum

The integration - “scan via context menu» is Shell Extension for explorer. That as you said allows scanning folders/files using right-click when in Windows Explorer

That feature is available in a-squared and should be present in McAfee AV too (as in most Avs) and most likely has nothing to do with file locking

So please describe the procedure in details and tell the developers and users here what file is blocked.

You can post the precise message and/or the image

{added} Was the message about a2freecontmenu.dll?

My regards

p.s.

Similar may happen during a-squared update or when you are trying to submit file that was flagged.

Sometimes you cannot do the latter when the rea-time resident of the AV is active and you have to disable it temporarily.

Disabling the real-time resident of AV recommended when installing / updating other Software and definitely when you are scanning with different scanner

...I've been using this on my desktops for years and I want to install it on my laptop now but

I can't get it to install...

HDRider,

I decided to add the following since you were reading my post already.

Can you remember whether there were leftovers from previous installation of a2-Free.

As I understand from you description you were using the Software before, but now decided to install the new version.

Were you performing the Update that you haven't perform for a long time

or

You downloaded the new installer from EMSI site and tried to run it?

My regards

Thanks for fast reply

this the the error message word for word

An Error has occurred while trying to replace existing file:

DeleteFile failed; code 5

Access denied

It doesn't tell me what file is locked.

I just checked my emails and I got one for comcast my isp

informing me that they have changed from McAfee to Norton 360 and they want me to switch ASAP

so right now I'm installing Norton 360

I will try to install your software after that with Norton Disabled and see if that does the trick

Also I mentioned I have been using this software on my desktops

I have never installed it on this laptop so there should not be any left over files.

I was at EMSI it sent me to CNET for the download and that is what I'm trying to run

I will post again after I get Norton 360 setup

THANKS

HDRider,

Thanks for reply and clarifying that the installation was on PC where a2-Free was not installed.

At the same time the message without the file name still mysterious.

Just out of curiosity for the future: Was there some indication "who's" message was that at least on the title bar of the message.

After the reinstalling the security now, please try clean reinstall of a2,

meaning that now you have that installed as far as I understand.

but 1st thing 1st.

If you will need "Clean Uninstall" procedure for a2 the reference will be provided.

My regards

p.s.

...I will post again after I get Norton 360 setup...
Please keep us posted. Thanks

Ok Norton is installed and working now

But to my surprize when I was uninstalling McAfee in the add & remove

I saw a2Free 2.0 in the program list

When I clicked start & all programs it was not listed

I used add & remove to uninstall a2Free 2.0

Rebooted and had the same problem

So I might need the "Clean Uninstall" procedure for a2

Also I did over look the top line on the error message

so to make it easier I've posted a picture of it

HDRider,

Now it's a bit more clear

The presence of a-squared should not be a surprise ;) it was mentioned above ( since you attempted to install it )

...meaning that now you have that installed as far as I understand....

The procedure of Clean Uninstall is describes in the old thread referred below.

The only thing that I am usually adding to that is stopping/disabling the service:

1)prior to following the procedure. Go into Services (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

2) Stop a2service.exe

3) Set the service as Disabled (see attached... how it should look like)

4) Reboot

5) Follow the procedure (link below)

6) Reboot

7) Check that you don't have folder / files / service leftovers (that should not be... but just in case)

8) Disable real-time of Norton (optional but better to)

9) Install a2-Free

The link: http://forum.emsisoft.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=2279

Please tell how that went

My regards

This took care of it

It has installed, updated and running deep scan now

Thanks so much for your help
