PC infected? and cannot run security programs

When booting up everything appears to function smoothly until the desktop appears. At that time I get the following message about autoload programs:

The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close application.

Windows does open and some programs such as QDir and Advanced Desktop Calendar and even Windows Defender can be run; but very few others including all security programs except Windows Defender; Defender indicates everything is OK.

I am using Hirem's Boot Disk to access the drives and run the EmergencyDisk from Emsisoft and FRST.exe. Emsisoft Emergency Disk finds NIrsoft utilities and one actual threat but will not delete or quarantine any of them.

I am running Win7 Ultimate with service pack 1.

Thank you for you help in this matter.

One other bit of information: I have read several threads and noticed the request for the "additions.txt" from FRST. The original reply did not include this file although it ran all the way through with a couple of warning boxes as followed: Windows - No Disk Box with the following message: Exception Processing Message c0000013 Paremeters 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c

I reran FRST again (see attached log) this time with the "List BCD" box checked and the "Drivers MD5" box checked thinking this would give me the "additions.txt" file. Still not "additions.txt" file created?? I got the same error message box as before and made the FRST program continue by hitting continue to finish. Retry would not let the program continue. Scan stopped on the following item when the error box came up: Services - cpuz134

Kevin,

The attached FRST.txt file was run from the safe mode in Win7. I tried a EEK run also but it gave me the same error message as earlier. Hope this helps.

I am having to boot between the Hirams disk to communicate because I don't have a working internet connection on the infected computer. Please bear with me.

Kevin,

Attached  is the FRST Fixlog.txt file.

Before I ran FRST64 with your fix I was able to log on to Win7 in the normal mode; the only thing I did prior was run SFC /scannow a couple of times while waiting for your response. Not sure if that was partially responsible or if it was due to actions taken during the initial EEK and FRST.exe and FRST64 runs. Still have spotty issues with internet connection; i.e. Emisoft Antimalware  cannot connect to verify key or activate the 30 day free trial (so doesn't run) but Online Armor apparently works OK; MalwareBytes can connect for updates? Getting occasional errors such as "invalid picture" when trying to open program files such as Tweaking.com Windows Repair. So doing better but still have issues I hope you can help me work through.

Thanks

OK,

I am going to have you run a couple tools that target adware and junkware in general.

Download AdwCleaner and save it on your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and Internet browsers (you may want to print our or write down these instructions first).
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Clean button.
  • Confirm each time with OK.
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open in Notepad after the restart (this is the log of what was removed), which you can save on your desktop.
  • Attach that log file to your reply by clicking the More Reply Options button to the lower-right of where you type in your reply.
  • If you lose that log file for any reason, you can find it at C:\AdwCleaner on your computer.
Download Junkware Removal Tool and save it on your desktop.
  • Shut down your anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Attach the JRT log file to a reply by clicking the More Reply Options button to the lower-right of where you type in your reply.

Kevin,

Things are doing better. I am now able to boot into the Win7 normal mode with no loading errors of autoruns including security software. Emsisoft Malware Suite is fully functional with activation key recognized. If you need any of your programs run in the Win7 normal 64bit mode it looks like I can do that now. Thanks

Changing tools.

Download RogueKiller from one of the following links and save it to your desktop:

  • Link 1
  • Link 2
    • Close all programs and disconnect any USB or external drives before running the tool.
    • Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run the tool (Vista or 7 users: Right-click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Once the Prescan has finished, click Scan.
    • Once the Status box shows "Scan Finished", just close the program. <--Don't fix anything!
    • Attach the RogueKiller report to your next reply.
      • The log can also be found on your desktop labeled (RKreport[X]_S_xxdatexx_xtimex)
      • The highest number of [X], is the most recent Scan

Kevin,

Sorry for the late reply. Attached is the RogueKiller log file. It was not automatically generated and I ran the RK program about 5 times before I saw the "Report" button. Once I pressed it it called the log up in Notepad but I had to "saveas" to the desktop once I typed in the file name in the log header. Just mentioned this because I expected to see a self generated and named file??

Thanks

Unless you are having problems, it is time to do the final steps.

Uninstall AdwCleaner:

  • Close all open programs and Internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on the Uninstall button.
  • Confirm by clicking Yes.
Delete the following from your Desktop: (If they exist)

AdwCleaner.exe

Emsisoft Emergency Kit.lnk

FRST.exe

FRST64.exe

JRT.exe

JRT.txt

Anything else I had you use

Delete the following folders: (If they exist)

C:\AdwCleaner

C:\EEK

C:\FRST

Empty the Recycle Bin

Download to your Desktop:

- CCleaner Portable

  • UnZip CCleaner Portable to a folder on your Desktop named CCleaner
Run CCleaner
  • Open the CCleaner Folder on your Desktop and double click CCleaner.exe (32-bit) or CCleaner64.exe (64-bit)
  • The following should be selected by default, if not, please select:

    4l5a4i.png

  • Click 16jox2o.png and choose 5x3nu8.gif
  • Uncheck 2wlsw11.gif
  • Then go back to 2jb4qyb.gif and click nf47ev.gif to run it.
  • Exit CCleaner.
Turn off System restore to flush all your restore points then turn system restore back on. See How To Enable and Disable System Restore.

You can delete and uninstall any programs I had you download, that you do not wish to keep on the system.

Run Windows Update and update your Windows Operating System.

Install and run the Secunia Personal Software Inspector, this will inspect your system for software that is out-of-date and in need of updating. Update anything program/application detected as being out-dated.
