But the most important factor of our security is our heads - if you aren't careful when you surf and do things then nothing will be able to save you from infections.

Where there's code there are also bugs. :) This sort of contest is very useful because it will reveal all kind of ways commonly-used software (browsers in this case) can be exploited. There's a nice incentive; winning participants will get a monetary reward and software companies know where they should start fixing their code, usually before malware authors have started actively exploiting found vulnerabilities.
