a-squared Free, delay in start

Recommended Posts

Well as a title says I am having a delay of about 5 - 10 minutes before my a-squared Free starts, is that normal or do I have to reinstall application?

btw, imho this is one of the best AVs out there, even better that commercial ones.

Regards,

Cokaric

Hi Cokaric, welcome to the forum

That is really strange and unusual to hear about such a delay as you reported (up to 10 minutes).

The only "substantial" delay during the Startup of the previouse a2 version that was discussed in our old forum was around 45sec to 1min. And that was (from my personal experience ) noticed on very old PC(s) – Pentium III with just 256MB of RAM (Windows 2000 Pro at that time).

Currently the statrup takes 2.5-3sec maximum here on XP Pro 32bit and on win7 x64, where beta5 is tested currently

The XP has the similar characteristics except it has 2GB of RAM & win7 is Quad with 8GB.

The only thing I may suspect that you are running “something else” like a game or something (?) when you are firing up a2.

I don't mean the programs/services that are listed in your post. Some of them can be actually disabled, but that is different discussion.

The “suspects” at the moment are

Available Physical Memory 182,77 MB
and your total memory being just 512MB, but I am not completely sure about those parameters being so crucial for startup's delay.

Probably developers will add to that

The thing is - when a2 just starts the total memory used by a2free and the a2service in combination is jumping up to 155-160MB

During the scan the max memory used can be up to 202MB

But again I don't have an idea at the moment what can cause up to 10 (!!!)min delay of a2 Startup unless, as I said something really memory/CPU hungry is running at the same time.

I hope we'll have some ideas eventually

My regards.

p.s. As an as side note – you cannot consider a2-Free edition as your full AV solution -it's just an on-demand scanner. But sure - the best one on the market.

Was the installation of XP [yesterday] a reformat and install, or was it a repair/upgrade? As Lynx says, there is definitely something funny going on here.

We have some XP PC's on our network that only have 512MB RAM. It is not enough to run standard MS-Office apps and an anti-virus/firewall.

How does the system behave normally? How long do you have to wait before everything has loaded after a reboot (discounting A-Squared, of course)?

@H_D

Partition format using NTFS data system, and after that new installation of Windows XP Professional SP3...

For the long time this computer has served me well and I newer had any problems with running any software or OS... I have on dual boot Windows 7 & Vista and they are working like a charm... I didn't yet installed MS Office 2007 Enterprise Edition cause I didn't had any time for it but on old OS (also XP SP3) it was working great... Visual Studio 2008, Visual Basic, CoD2, MoH-PA, LEGO-Indiana Jones, LEGO-Star Wars... and many other app are running pretty fast on my comp. Well Adobe PS CS4 does block sometimes but not for long time and after all I don't use it that often.

System is starting in about 30 s, with boot, since its fresh installation ofc. I need to w8 for couple of seconds for explorer to load my personal settings and after that I am ready for work.

A-Squared Free doesn't start even Start Scanner option is check (is that option to start scanner on start up?).

@Lynx

I am not running any applications in background or on start up, I disabled all unnecessary so I can start my OS asap when I need it. I will use a stop watch to measure correct time when will a-squared Free start minus the time needed for windows to start up and edit it here in this post.

EDIT

~34 seconds to boot system with bios detecting all hard drives and optical drives.

~13 seconds for windows to load my personal settings and applications on start up to start up

On my stop watch thats 00' 47",87

I am ready to start any application now, will shut down Chrome and start a-squared Free.

Well I am pleased with it starting. Results are >>

01' 19",66

01' 34",02

01' 19",89

The only thing I changed is that I was defragmenting all of my portions in last couple of hours, u see that rundll32.exe process in previous posts, he swallow most some amount of memory.

Can u now suggest me how to speed up the start up time, this is surtenly allot faster but still I am not satisfied, I mean on software base, not hardware but please suggest that also.

/EDIT

Yes I notice the memory that a-squared Free is using during the start up and scanning, for me its 106 -130 MB at startup but I didn't check the memory usage of a-squared Free during the scan.

CPU usage is momentarily 1% of both cores, usually its from 0% - 6% when I am just running Google Chrome. That almost all that I used these 2 days. Only thing I need to ask u is could it be because of quarantine, but as I saw he loads quarantine only when I enter it, so I am really confused. I didn't had these problems with any other AV even paid ones...

Well for the AV solution I will consider a-squared Free as my full AV solution, I have my reasons and I last 8 months I have discovered some interesting facts about this AV, will keep them for my self but I believe that currently this is the best scanner on the market even though I am using it for the first time on my own OS.

I will probably use McAfee's FW 8.5 with it and nothing else.

Cokaric

Thanks for reply, Cokaric

... A-Squared Free doesn't start even Start Scanner option is check (is that option to start scanner on start up?).

Please be more precise about this option? There is no option in Free edition for “Starting with Windows”

If you mean the checkbox in Configuration> Permission Tab, then No – that one as any other options in that area dedicated to giving or restricting rights for other users by the Administrator for those systems where there are several users with Limited User Accounts

If the startup time now is around 1 min it is stilt not fast enough but at least that is not a 10 min delay as initially stated. That is acceptable and probably depends on those parameters described.

Low in free memory – a2 should load all signatures; performance of the disk / & memory type as well; The page file could be fragmented too if you never defragged that it could be not optimized for your particular environment; etc. That is a bit out of scope of discussions here regarding “how to”... including finding about the rundll32.exe and the memory usage by it as you mentioned.

If you are the only user and the Administrator (stressing) - you can Disable a2service of a2-Free edition.

I doubt that it would speed up a2 startup, but probably we may suspect some conflicts with other processes and/or services. But try anyway.

...Only thing I need to ask u is could it be because of quarantine, but as I saw he loads quarantine only when I enter it, so I am really confused. I didn't had these problems with any other AV even paid ones

a-squared creates a list of the suspects and the the user have to make a decision.

It only notifies you. That is a correct (soft and safe) approach.

Other AV's have this options as well. Some of them, e.g. Avira, has the default setting for notification-dialogue only.

Auto-quarantine could be dangerous

Please read this Sticky regarding the matter

So when & if you will use McAfee (which I not a best choice according to my knowledge) – disable all “auto-” deletion / healing settings straight after the installation

Your “could it be because of quarantine?” cannot be answered because we have no idea what was quarantined. Next time pleas save the report; submit the items to the developers & ask if you are not sure

My regards

In addition to Lynx's observations, I would like to add the following:

I am confused by what you have written. You say that the install you did was a fresh format and install. This wipes the partition, then installs Windows. There will be no defragmentation after a format and install. OK, after a day, there may be the tiniest element of defragmentation, but nothing that could affect I/O disk activity. Therefore, it is very unlikely that the defrag had any effect on the performance of A2.

Similarly, there is no need for 'speeding' up the computer. Unless you have installed lots of other programs that include boot options where modules such as updaters or monitors are loaded, your system should be running well. Sounds like you know how to look after your PC.

When I have run A-Squared Free on XP systems with 512MB RAM (single-core), it has taken at least a minute for the application to start, so your times seem OK.

If you are able to run those games well, then your system must be in good shape.

How does Vista run on your PC with such a low amount of RAM?

As Lynx says, A2 program startup delays can be caused by security products interfering with each other which is why you need to create mutual exclusions so that they ignore each other.

Finally, although you may be happy with your present security setup, you are unprotected against malware threats. Without a resident scanner your system can be compromised.
