Question about PDF

If a PDF file is downloaded from unknown sources, it won't effect the system as much compared to suspicious .exe files?

If it's a malware PDF file, then yes it will effect the system as .exe file. Any malware files you download from the internet it will effect the system, it doesn't matter what extension it have.

PDF files can be specially crafted to exploit a vulnerability in the program that opens them (like Adobe Reader) and then used to download and execute malicious files/code on a system. Pretty much every program that can load 3rd party content (like files) and that have known exploits or can be exploited will do that.
