Possible FBI scam virus?

Hi Kevin, you helped me before, I wonder if you could possibly help me again, please! Today I got one of those fake FBI warning web pages, saying I had accessed illegal information. I quickly closed the page, it tried to re-open so I closed it again. I then restarted my pc in safe mode with command prompts and did a system restore to the day before. I ran a smart scan with Emisoft Emergency Kit and it didn't find anything (apart from a false positive which is always finds). I then ran MalwareBytes Anti-Malware which found another false positive from another Chinese program. I deleted both these reported files just to be safe. I ran HitmanPro and it found a few tracking cookies, a few false positives from Chinese programs, and reported my certclient.dat as being suspicious. I didn't do anything with them and came to this forum for help.

The scam web page didn't seem to take control of my browser or my computer in any visible way, but my antivirus reported that several web addresses were being redirected. After a Google search of the IP, it seems that may be my Astril VPN. What should I do to make sure my PC hasn't been infected?  I ran Emisoft again as per the forum instructions (smart scan?), and then Farbar and attached the files.

Thanks again, Kevin.

Your FRST log does show a few issues, that still need to be corrected.

Do the following:

Download AdwCleaner and save it on your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and Internet browsers (you may want to print our or write down these instructions first).
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Clean button.
  • Confirm each time with OK.
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open in Notepad after the restart (this is the log of what was removed), which you can save on your desktop.
  • Attach that log file to your reply by clicking the More Reply Options button to the lower-right of where you type in your reply.

NOTE: If you lose that log file for any reason, you can find it at C:\AdwCleaner on your computer.

It didn't open in a notepad after the computer restarted so I had to do into the directory. There are two files. Not sure which one you need. I had a Facebook page reroute today. Not sure why, if it was because I accidentally clicked something or what, but the page looked a bit dodgy and I closed it asap.

Also my Astill VPN stopped working. Not sure if it deleted a file or plug-in for that. So I had to reinstall it.

Unless you are having problems, it is time to do the final steps.

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:

Download Delfix from here and save it to your desktop.

  • Ensure Remove disinfection tools is checked.
  • Also place a checkmark next to:
    • Create registry backup
    • Purge system restore
  • Click the Run button.
When the tool is finished, a log will open in notepad. I do not need the log. You can close Notepad.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Download to your Desktop:

- CCleaner Portable

  • UnZip CCleaner Portable to a folder on your Desktop named CCleaner
Run CCleaner
  • Open the CCleaner Folder on your Desktop and double click CCleaner.exe (32-bit) or CCleaner64.exe (64-bit)
  • Click "Options" and choose "Advanced"
  • Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 24 hours"
  • Then go back to "Cleaner" and click the "RunCleaner" button.
  • Exit CCleaner.
Turn off System restore to flush all your restore points then turn system restore back on. See How To Enable and Disable System Restore.

You can delete and uninstall any programs I had you download, that you do not wish to keep on the system.

Run Windows Update and update your Windows Operating System.

Install and run the Secunia Personal Software Inspector, this will inspect your system for software that is out-of-date and in need of updating. Update anything program/application detected as being out-dated.

That is too large to send us.

Make sure you have MiniDumps enabled.

For Windows 7:

  • Go to the Control Panel, choose 'System And Security', and then click 'System', and then click the 'Advanced System Settings' link.
  • In the opened window, click the 'Advanced' tab and then inside the 'Startup And Recovery' frame, click the 'Settings' button.
  • In the opened 'Startup And Recovery' window, there is 'Write Debugging Information' section. You should set the combo-box in this section to 'Small memory dump', and then click 'ok' to confirm the change.
