Product Comparison (EAM vs EIS)

Recommended Posts

Emsisoft Anti-Malware (EAM) has the following main features:

  • File Guard: Monitors for threats using two anti-virus engines and two databases of hashes and heuristics (one created and maintained by us, and one provided by BitDefender).
  • Behavior Blocker: Monitors for any potentially malicious behavior, and displays an alert when any unknown application exhibits any of these behaviors so that you can decide to allow or block it.
  • Surf Protection: Monitors all DNS requests (attempts to determine the IP address of a website), and blocks any attempt to resolve the IP address of a known malicious website.
  • On-Demand Scanning: Allows running of several types of scans to check your computer for an infection.
  • Scheduled Scans: For scheduling automatic scans to run at specific times on specific days, or at specific time intervals.
  • Automatic Updates: By default once ever hour any new database files or program files are downloaded automatically (the amount of time in between automatic updates can be customized).
  • Application Rules: Allows for the editing of rules created by the Behavior Blocker, as well as creation of new rules to allow/block applications.
  • Logs: Logs for all of the Guards (File Guard, Behavior Blocker, and Surf Protection) as well as Update and Scan logs.
  • Optional PUP Detection: Potentially Unwanted Applications (many browser toolbars, fake computer "optimizers", and other applications that can be annoying or degrade the performance of your computer without providing any real benefit) can be detected and removed by the scanner, and many can even be blocked by the File Guard.
  • Privacy Settings: You have control of what information is sent to our servers, as well as whether or not that information is encrypted before being sent (to prevent snooping).
  • Notifications: All notifications can be turned on/off, and the amount of time they are displayed can be changed.
  • Import/Export Settings: Settings can be exported to make backup copies, and imported again later. There is also a "Restore factory defaults" option that can be used to restore any of the settings in EAM to their original defaults.

Emsisoft Internet Security (EIS) includes all of these features, plus the addition of a firewall. Firewall rules are configurable for each application in the Application Rules, and a "Firewall" section has been added to the "Protection" and "Logs" sections (in the menus at the top of the EIS window) where there are controls over firewall rules/settings, and logs showing when firewall rules have been created and removed.

I've used the trial and now registered EIS, I have to say it's great. Does everything security software should be doing with sensible, advanced features and no additional, flashy stuff that drag the PC down. Clear, easy to use UI -but not dumb- and your support and communication is stellar. Plus, your privacy policy rocks in a time almost everyone else seems to require full and unrestricted access to my PC's files.

Well done.
