I've been having problems with the windows\syswow64\dnsapi.dll on my computer for some time. I use Avast and it instantly detects the file. Avast couldnt remove the file and it remains on my computer to this day. Even worse, as long as I keep Avast active, I cant open my internet. I get a crash report every single time. I have to disable my antivirus to access the internet. Here are the logs created by the emergency kit and Fanbar scanner.

Do the following:

Download AdwCleaner and save it on your desktop.

  1. Close all open programs and Internet browsers (you may want to print our or write down these instructions first).
  2. Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  3. Click on the Scan button.
  4. After the scan has finished, click on the Clean button.
  5. Confirm each time with OK.
  6. You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open in Notepad after the restart (this is the log of what was removed), which you can save on your desktop.
  7. Attach that log file to your reply by clicking the More Reply Options button to the lower-right of where you type in your reply.
NOTE: If you lose that log file for any reason, you can find it at C:\AdwCleaner on your computer.

Download Junkware Removal Tool and save it on your desktop.

  1. Run the tool by double-clicking it.
  2. The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  3. Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  4. On completion, a log is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  5. Attach the JRT log file to a reply by clicking the More Reply Options button to the lower-right of where you type in your reply.

Copy the below code to Notepad; Save As fixlist.txt to your Desktop.

I am going to have you invoke Windows Files Protection by running the System File Checker.

System File Checker

  • Click on Start and type cmd in the search box. Right click on cmd in the popup menu and select Run as Administrator.
  • Another box will open, at the Command Prompt, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. (Note the gap between the c and the /)
  • Let the check run to completion. DO NOT reboot the PC or close the cmd window.
  • Copy & Paste the following command at the Command Prompt and press Enter:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

  • This will place a file on your desktop called sfcdetails.txt which contains the results of the scan.
  • Attach sfcdetails.txt to your next post.

The FRST.txt scan log did not post.

Unfortunately, it appears the Windows File Store has been damaged.

Let's try resetting several areas of Windows to their defautls.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html  to your desktop.  Use the direct download link for the Portable version of Windows Repair by Tweaking.com

  • Double-click "tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip" and extract the "Tweaking.com - Windows Repair" folder to your desktop.
  • Now open this folder and double-click "Repair_Windows.exe".
  • Click the "Repairs" tab on the far right.
  • Click the "Open Repairs" button (bottom right)

Note: When asked if you would like to create a restore point. It is recommended just in-case something does not go as planned.

  • Click "Unselect All"
  • Put a checkmark in the following items:
    • 01 - Reset Registry Permissions
    • 02 - Reset File Permissions
    • 03 - Reset Service Permissions
    • 04 - Register System Files
    • 10 - Remove Policies Set By Infections
    • 19 - Repair Volume Shadow Copy Service
    • 26 - Restore Important Windows Services
    • 27 - Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • 28.01 - Repair Windows 8/10 App Store
    • 28.02 - Repair Windows 8/10 App Store (Completely Reset App Store)
    • 29 - Repair Windows 8/10 Component Store
    • 30 - Repair Windows 8/10 COM+ Unmarshalers
    • 31 - Repair Windows 'New' Submenu
    • 33 - Repair Performance Counters

Note: Leave everything else unchecked

  • Put a checkmark in "Restart System When Finished"
  • Now click the "Start" button (bottom right)

That should take care of everything.

Unless you are having problems, it is time to do the final steps.

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:

Download Delfix from here and save it to your desktop.

  • Ensure Remove disinfection tools is checked.
  • Also place a checkmark next to:
    • Create registry backup
    • Purge system restore

  • Click the Run button.

When the tool is finished, a log will open in notepad. I do not need the log.  You can close Notepad.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Download to your Desktop:
- CCleaner Portable

  • UnZip CCleaner Portable to a folder on your Desktop named CCleaner

Run CCleaner

  • Open the CCleaner Folder on your Desktop and double-click CCleaner.exe (32-bit) or CCleaner64.exe (64-bit)
  • Click "Options" and choose "Advanced"
  • Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 24 hours"
  • Then go back to "Cleaner" and click the "RunCleaner" button.
  • Exit CCleaner.

You can delete and uninstall any programs I had you download, that you do not wish to keep on the system.

To Remove EEK simple delte the EEK for in the of your System Srive, normally C:\EEK

Run Windows Update and update your Windows Operating System.
