Rootkit SmartService Infection

Recommended Posts

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for taking the time to help me. I was finally able to get the scan started based on the linked instructions, but now it appears it isn't responding. It's been stuck on the same file location all day. Before it timed out it had detected over 7k malware hits. The only option it available is to cancel.

Should I cancel and try again?

Thanks,

Cass

Cass,

MBAR is most likely chocking on the folder "C:\Users\Katelyn\AppData\Local\ntuserlitelist\vgatdli".  It contains literally thousands of files that will bring most scanners to a stand still.  Run MBAR with only the Drivers Box selected, this will remove the active infection, and will let us deal with the rest on the infection.

Thanks, will try that now. It definitely was choking. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again for your help.

Ok, it found two files, one of which I referenced in my original post, and I "cleaned" them up (deleted them). Should I run the MBAR scan again with all boxes checked?

EDIT: I've since tried running MBAR again and it still chokes. I decided to run regular malwarebytes (which I am now able to do) and it seems to seems like it might be working.

Let's see how well that worked.

Run fresh scans with Emsisoft Emergency Kit (EEK) and FRST, attach the new EEK and FRST scans to your reply.

It's actually really slow. Task Manager is showing constant 100% disk usage. It appears Malwarebytes Service is the culprit, but I'm not really sure.

Also, something I've noticed is shortly after I turn the computer on, a command prompt (not sure if that's the correct terminology) window appears for just a second. Too quick to read what it is, but it looks like it has C: program files x86 in the title of the window. Not sure if this is related or not.

I really appreciate your help getting to this point and am hoping you have a solution for these last remaining issues.

Looks like Malwarebytes is not registering its driver when it creates a new driver.

Here is the fixlog.

Upon restart it seems to be running much smoother. Disk usage is still pegged at 100% but I don't really notice it.

Thanks again for your help.

I am going to have you run a tool that targets Adware and Junkware.

Download AdwCleaner and save it on your desktop.

  1. Close all open programs and Internet browsers (you may want to print our or write down these instructions first).
  2. Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  3. Click on the Scan button.
  4. After the scan has finished, click on the Clean button.
  5. Confirm each time with OK.
  6. You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open in Notepad after the restart (this is the log of what was removed), which you can save on your desktop.
  7. Attach that log file to your reply by clicking the More Reply Options button to the lower-right of where you type in your reply.
NOTE: If you lose that log file for any reason, you can find it at C:\AdwCleaner on your computer.
