a2service.exe removed from system?!

As of today (25-Apr-2011) EAM does no longer start, but pops up this error instead:

"A major problem prevents application start. Anti-Malware can't connect to the service application. Please reboot your PC and try again or contact support if the problem remains."

Several reboots did not help, the error above occurred over and over again.

Then I tried to check the status of the A2 service and noticed that it was not started. When I tried to start it manually, I got this error:

"Windows could not start the Emsisoft Anti-Malware 5.0 - Service service on Local Computer.

Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."

I guess the "file specified" is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Emsisoft Anti-Malware\a2service.exe" which indeed no longer exists!

In that directory I see a2service.elf (24-Apr-2011, 1.614 KB) and A2SERVICE.old (29-Mar-2011, 2.794 KB), but NO a2service.exe

What might have caused this? A failed updated, or an attack by malware? (Hitman Pro and MBAM did not find anything on my system today) No GUI starts, so I can't inspect log files...

And how to solve it (in the future)? I guess I'm going to reinstall EAM and see what happens.

XIII,

Does OA History shows anything regarding the a2service ?

Hi Guys!

ctrlaltdelete,

"OA History?" what do you mean by that?

You probably know (or remember from previous posts) that XIII is running OA

There is no info about his system. I see that he is running win 7 from what he'ev posted

I will have access to win 7 x64 in about half an our (no OA there)

Full EAM beta is in place . Will report back ...

Cheers!

The only two log entries I see for this weekend are the result of the re-install (the service was trusted by digital signature and tried to modify the registry).

Hi XIII,

I've tested that on win7 x64 as promised

There were no issues whatsoever EAM just updated automatically to v5.1.0.11

That was definitely not "an attack by malware" - no doubts

As for the failure of updating  - most likely

<>.ELFs as far as I know, are crash report(s)

Have you got any displayed , so you can send it to the developers?

My regards

.ELFs as far as I know, are crash report(s)

Ah, I did not know that.

They are even in human readable format and apparently this was the exception:

Exception:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

2.1 Date : Thu' date=' 14 Apr 2011 20:21:40 +0200

2.2 Address : 769BB722

2.3 Module Name : KERNELBASE.dll - (Windows NT BASE API Client DLL)

2.4 Module Version: 6.1.7601.17514

2.5 Type : EOutOfMemory

2.6 Message : Out of memory.

2.7 ID : 0D72

2.8 Count : 1

2.9 Status : New

2.10 Note :

[/quote']

I did indeed have some low memory warnings yesterday (while running VmWare Player).

This would explain a crash to me, but not the disappearance of an executable on disk...
