General Question about A-Squared Free

Recommended Posts

Hello Forum,

I'm new to this program and I've read the FAQs but I've also read around the forums and gotten some information that slightly confuses me, so I'm hoping someone can clear these questions up for me.

1: Is A-Squared FREE, a full Anti-Virus Program, all on its own? ( FAQs say yes, I've heard forum users say no. )

2: Will, A-Squared FREE, automatically detect viruses, spyware "Etc" upon the actual infection? Or will I have to manually scan it every time? Automatic detections are very important to me.

3: My Windows Security says that I do not have an Anti-Virus installed even though A-Squared is fully installed and working. Is this a problem, or just a hissy fit Windows 7 is having, and am I still protected?

I'm sorry if any of these questions have been asked before. I've looked around the forums a bit and didn't find exactly the answers I wanted so I'm trying this.

I would greatly appreciate any help given.

Thank you in advance for your time, help and patience.

Hi Sairith,

Welcome on Emsi's forum.

1. a-squared FREE is an on-demand scanner only.

2. No, if you want automatic detection of malware that is trying to install you need a-squared Anti-Malware.

3. a-squared FREE is not recognized by Windows Security Center. a-squared Anti-Malware should be recognized by Windows Security Center when it is installed and active. However, Windows Security Center isn't always showing the correct information.

Thank you for your reply, if I could ask one more question to have reassurance I'd greatly appreciate it, even though I believe you answered it in your previous post.

If I were to buy the program following program, "A-Squared Anti-Malware", I would in fact have an Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Malware program that did automatic real time detections correct, or am I mistaken?

Sorry to ask a question that for is probably already common knowledge, but my experience with computers and Anti-Virus software is extremely limited so I'm trying to make certain I know what this program does before I purchase it.

I appreciate your patience and time,

Thank you.

Yes, a-squared Anti-Malware uses an on-execution scanner, malware-IDS and Surf Protection as you can read here.

Still it is compatible with other AV programs. So a-squared Anti-Malware can also be used as an extra security layer.

I never understood the reasons for having an on access scan. The feature is like web scanning, I haven't seen a real case were catching a virus on a HTTP stream or on access provides any more security than stopping it on execution. HTTP scanning and on access scanning only slow HDD speeds down. Another feature that Norton now has is the ability to exclude known safe files, for extra speed, but there is still a webscanner and on access scanner.
